In an effort to provide more out-of-the-box functionality and to protect Active Directory from mistakes and security problems, Quest Software has upgraded its flagship ActiveRoles Server to include workflow and refined access accountability, as well as support for the latest Microsoft platforms.
The management and provisioning application "helps you achieve and sustain regulatory compliance by implementing secure, automated, and auditable internal controls over granting access to network resources," says Bob Bobel, Quest's senior product manager.
The software makes it possible to automate all aspects of account management. Its three-tier architecture acts as a firewall around the directory. "The benefit of this architecture is that we have a single point of change for identity and attribute information, which can be made subject to roles, rules, or approval workflow," Bobel explains.
Version 6.5 includes an upgraded self-service manager, workflows, Windows PowerShell scripting, policy extensions, group deprovisioning, a recycle bin, and support for Windows Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008, and Exchange Server 2010.
A codeless rules engine makes it possible to provision accounts and groups into Active Directory. Centralized reporting gives reports on role definitions, rule definitions, objects out of compliance, and administrators' activity. User provisioning is automated, and the product features the ability to manage Active Directory from a single location across domains and forests.
ActiveRoles Server is targeted at directory service owners, Active Directory or identity architects, help desk managers, and security, identity, and compliance managers. Customers include Children's Memorial Hospital and Georgian College. Competitors include Courion and NetIQ.
Pricing for Version 6.5 starts at $25 per enabled user.
Version 2.0 of Quest ActiveRoles Self-Service Manager pricing starts at $10 per enabled user, as does pricing for Quest ActiveRoles Quick Connect for Base Systems, Mainframes, Lotus Notes, and Online Services.
