Keynote's KITE 2.0 Can Test Web 2.0 App Performance
in Many Cities

KITE 2.0 (Keynote Internet Testing Environment) from Keynote Systems, the supplier of on-demand mobile and Internet test and measurement products, provides its users with some new options for testing the performance of a Web application from their desktops.

KITE enables developers, QA testers, and performance analysts to measure the end-user experience of Web 2.0 applications that may include AJAX and asynchronously downloaded content. Transaction scripts can be run in real time from multiple cities, exploiting Keynote's global test and measurement network.

"In the early days of the Web, very little interaction was happening between the browser and the Web server behind it. Most of the Web applications consisted of HTML pages," says Rajeev Kutty, product manager with Keynote Systems. "Now, in the transition to the Web 2.0 world, the applications are more dynamic and use scripting languages so that more work is being done by the browser. The applications on the browser side have grown in complexity."

The Keynote business model for KITE calls for money to be made on the Web operations side when scripts get deployed and require continuous monitoring. Kutty says that pricing for the paid service can start at $100/month for a 15-minute monitoring cycle in 10 U.S. cities. Many customers spend on the order of $5,000 a year on such services from Keynote, he adds.

Magic Software's uniPaaS
Unites Client-, Server-side Development

Magic Software is attempting to meet a rising demand for more interactive and attractive application capabilities with the release of its uniPaaS application platform, the latest version of the company's eDeveloper application technology.

uniPaaS, says Glenn Johnson, Magic Software's senior vice president, "brings together the capability for Rich Internet Applications as well as a Software-as-a-Service-enabled application platform from a unified or single development paradigm." Developers can use uniPaaS to access both client-side and server-side resources.

Once a developer creates an application, in this case by using a parametric interface rather than line-by-line code, he or she then chooses how to deploy it: full-client, Web, on-premise or on-demand, software or Software as a Service, or globally or locally. Developers can also choose whether they want the logic to be executed on the client or server side, or whether they want uniPaaS to determine the best option for them: client only, server only, or somewhere in between.

Pricing depends on a customer's requirements. A typical enterprise-level development studio is priced at $5,995. Free developer versions are available as well.

ASG's MetaCMDB:
a Step Toward Metadata-Enabling the Enterprise

ASG Software Solutions has made public its configuration management database technology with a scalable data model that focuses on federation in MetaCMDB 3.2.0. This newer version includes tighter integration with the company's Automation Center as well as a Federated Adapter Engine that provides access to federated data stores.

MetaCMDB 3.2.0, powered by the company's Rochade metadata repository, is a "major staging point on our trajectory to having a dominant platform to business and IT service management," says Ian Rowlands, ASG's senior director of product management. "We have a very broad vision where our configuration management database serves as a platform for realizing the conversation between an IT organization and the business."

MetaCMDB uses a three-tiered architecture. Its lowest level offers discovery capabilities. Above that resides a technology layer that exposes data to the configuration management database and to a status store. At the top is a presentation layer that exposes management-level dashboards and end-user interfaces.

Typical pricing is $600,000 for the core edition and $900,000 for the expanded edition, which includes the core package plus change control and traceability, service-level management, change and service desk management, and identity and access management. Pricing includes one year of maintenance and professional services.
