Harland Clarke and Mitek Collaborate to Strengthen Mobile Deposit Security

01.27.2016

Harland Clarke, a leading provider of integrated payment solutions and Mitek, a global leader in mobile capture and identity verification software solutions, today announced a new product launch that will improve security of Mobile Deposit® for consumers and financial institutions. Starting January 17, 2016, checks printed by Harland Clarke will include new Photo Safe Deposit™ features recognized only by the advanced computer vision embedded in Mitek’s Mobile Deposit software. These features increase the integrity and security of checks deposited through the mobile channel.

Consumers and financial institutions want a check product and process that makes mobile deposits safer. With its Photo Safe Deposit™ icon, Harland Clarke’s newly patented printing technology reinvents the way checks are processed with Mitek’s powerful back-end software providing amplified assurance that mobile banking users can use one of their most desired applications in a secure manner.

“Harland Clarke is committed to offering products that align with the goals of our Financial Institution clients and their account holders’ evolving needs,” said Rick Ebrey, President, Harland Clarke Payment Solutions. “With Photo Safe Deposit™ we support both security and mobile banking through features offered only by Harland Clarke which fosters increased remote deposit capture (RDC) adoption. Together, with Mitek’s expertise, we improve the Mobile Deposit experience, encourage best practices and enhance confidence in the mobile channel.”

The added benefits require no additional steps for consumers. Checks are printed and delivered to customers with the Photo Safe Deposit icon, a camera-lock graphic, placed on the front. When this is recognized by a mobile device via Mitek’s back-end software, the checks are scanned for key features—Image Match™ and Mobile Mark SM, also additional features provided by Harland Clarke.

Image Match™ is the identical magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) code lines printed on both sides of the check. This duplicate data assures financial institutions that the check’s front and back side images are from the same document—a process that minimizes endorsement forgery while also eliminating depositor errors when photographing multiple checks in a single deposit. Mobile Mark SM is a box for users to checkmark when a deposit is made via smartphone, reducing the risk of inadvertently depositing the same check in the future. When one or both add-ons are recognized, transaction integrity is greatly improved.

“The new security features printed on the checks improve the Mobile Deposit experience that millions of Americans love,” said James B. DeBello, president and CEO, Mitek. “Check features must be continually updated for the advanced methods banks use to process checks. The benefit of Harland Clarke’s advanced approach to printing checks with Photo Safe Deposit features designed for Mitek’s Mobile Deposit is that our combined technology does all the work to increase security and mitigate depositor errors without any extra steps required by consumers or banks.”

Through Harland Clarke and Mitek’s collaboration, the highest level of mobile deposit protection is provided. The end result is an improved secure way to process check transactions for both consumers and financial institutions.
